About the Practice

Choosing a Therapist is Hard. How Do I Find Someone Really Good?

The first step is to make sure the person is a licensed, credentialed and has the appropriate level of experience. Call the provider and ask any questions you may have. A good provider will be responsive and happy to answer these questions before setting up a meeting.

One Size Does Not Fit All in Psychotherapy.

If the person meets the above criteria, set up a consultation. The consultation will provide you with enough information to decide whether to continue with this provider or move on. A good provider will leave you feeling understood, respected and hopeful. As therapy progresses, you will begin to develop a better understanding of yourself and feel increasingly empowered to make meaningful change. The things you discover in therapy should feel meaningful and important to you. Over time, you should better be able to manage your moods and behavior, feel lighter and less burdened, and enjoy life more. A good therapist will refer you to another provider if she/he sees that she is not able to help you within a month or two. A good therapist will never keep a client in therapy longer than they need to be,

Consider Having a Therapy End-Date.

Open-ended therapy is appropriate and helpful for some people, but many do equally well, if not better, by setting an end-date. Contracting for a discrete number of sessions ensures that both you and your therapist use your time well. You can always go back and do another chunk of work, tackle a different problem, or work towards a new goal. "Chunking" versus open-ended treatment is not only more cost-effective, it better mimics how people change.
